letters to my multi-media teacher #10

It's a wrap, folks!

Dear Tabitha,

You asked for a final post, reviewing the semester...

Out of all the tools we reviewed this year, most of my favourites weren’t new. I use many of my favourites regularly: Gmail, Facebook, Pinterest, Spotify, YouTube, Doodle, and screen-shot tools like Jing (I use Window’s Snipping Tool).

However, many tools were new too. I was interested in lots of the entertainment and educational tools that were introduced in week nine, including Storybird. I’m not sold on the concept of social bookmarking but am intrigued by Library Thing.
The podcast week was also great—It was a fun change of pace and I figured out how to use Spotify for podcasts.

I would be interested to learn more about tools with very clear practical usage for libraries, like StackMap and SurveyMonkey—But, only if there was an immediate need for them. I guess, an introduction to more of those one-function, administrative(?) type of tools makes the most sense for on-the-job training, work placements and ongoing-learning once we’re working in the library world.

Overall, I enjoyed collecting lists of future resources, learning new concepts and terms like RSS feeds, as well as starting to get a fuller picture of multi-media usage and potential in 2.0 libraries. One highlight from the semester: finally having a handle on “the cloud” concept!

Sincerely,
Chris
