letters to my multi-media instructor #8

Snap, roll ...Jing?

Dear Tabitha,

You asked about productivity tools...

In Broad Strokes:

Productivity tools are intended to help people stay organized and productive in different parts of life. There are many online sites and downloadable applications that address three aspects of productivity: 1) collaboration, 2) word processing and presentations, and 3) time management.

About Jing:
Jing is a phone or desktop application that falls under the intended-use-umbrella of collaboration.

Image capture was taken with Jing.
The main function of Jing is capturing images and video and preparing them for sharing. Here is a video link that is a good introduction. Tutorials from Techsmith are also very helpful when setting starting out with Jing.

How might an image and video capture app be useful in a library-related job?
This would be useful for patron education. Videos could be created and posted on Youtube or directly on the library website to address common questions. Common public library questions include: "How do I place a hold from the catalogue?," " How can I load audiobooks onto my personal device?," and "How do I print this?" Screen captures could be useful for training, troubleshooting, and personal communication with other staff (most likely via email or instant messaging): "Where do I find room X?" "This error window that keeps popping up when..."

That's all for now.

Sincerely,
Chris
