Letters to my multi-media instructor #4

OverDrive: An Apt App

Dear Tabitha,

You asked about library apps...

In Broad Strokes:
Applications, or apps, are software programs that are accessed on “platforms” such as computers, social networks and gaming systems. They used to be bought on discs and primarily loaded onto computers. Today, however, apps are usually inexpensive, found through GooglePlay or iTunes, and downloaded onto devices instantly. These changes—including the average decrease in cost and ease of install—have made apps very popular. Popular platforms include cell phones and tablets. Everyday users can collect apps to suit their needs and everyone’s “collection” looks a little different. For example, my dad is really into birding. On his cell phone, he has a dedicated folder for birding apps.

Library App Exploration
I choose to look at OverDrive. I've been procrastinating loading my phone with audio for bus trip entertainmentThis was a great opportunity to look for a free app for audiobooks.

What is OverDrive?
OverDrive is a subscription-based app that allows streaming and downloads of ebooks, audiobooks and video. All you need is a valid library card of a participating library. It is used by public and school libraries around the world. I accessed OverDrive through Winnipeg Public Library.

Is It Useful? Why?
Yes, it's useful. OverDrive meets the need for on-the-go library borrowing.

In-keeping with library values, it's accessible anytime, anywhere, and free. Borrowed titles are automatically returnedpeople don't have to keep track of due dates or worry about late fees. Users can also bookmark items to borrow in the future and sync OverDrive account across different platforms and operating systems. The best part is that it comes ready to go (an e-reader and audiobook player are built in).

I followed online installation instructions from WPL's webpage; although, with more than 30,000 libraries using the app, It's assuring that there are humans out there who can help troubleshoot if needed.

Finally looking forward to my next bus ride!

Sincerely,
Chris
